The constraint — a site closed for several days by regional disruption
Partway through the programme the site closed for several days. Regional disruption made it unsafe and impractical for the workforce to travel in, and no fit-out programme has contingency for that — it is not a delay that can be sequenced around or recovered by working differently.
How we solved it — recovering the lost days once it was safe to work again
Once the situation stabilised we increased the working hours and put on additional shifts until the lost days had been made up, and the store was completed on time.
What this means for a retail fit-out
There is not much to generalise from it, except this: what a client is actually buying on a fixed programme is the ability to recover. Nobody can prevent an interruption of that kind. What a contractor can do is have the labour, the supervision and the relationship with the centre to put the time back once it is possible to work again.
