The constraint — client-supplied furniture seven days late on a fixed opening
Client-supplied furniture arrived seven days later than the programme assumed. On a forty-five day job that is a substantial share of the time available, and it lands at the end — when there is nothing left to bring forward and no sequence left to rearrange.
How we solved it — extra manpower and longer shifts through installation
We absorbed it by increasing manpower and extending the shifts through the installation period. The store opened on the date it had been given.
What this means for a retail fit-out
Handing furniture and fixtures to the contractor to procure removes this problem entirely, and many retailers prefer to keep it themselves for good commercial reasons. Either is workable — what matters is that the programme is written knowing which it is, because the two are not the same job.
