Complete interior fit-out including civil, MEP, glass and joinery installation. A two hundred and fifty square metre drive-thru in Isa Town, delivered in sixty-five days — the first Starbucks drive-thru in Bahrain.
The constraint — the first drive-thru of its kind in the country
There was no local precedent. The brand's designers supplied the concept, but a drive-thru has to work against the way traffic, access and service actually operate in Bahrain, and the regulations here are not the ones the concept was drawn for. The ergonomics of the lane, the service window and the queuing had to be resolved rather than adopted.
How we solved it — researching the local standards before building to them
We spent a considerable period researching how the concept had to change to meet Bahraini standards, and engineered it to fit before work began rather than discovering the conflicts on site. Despite the time that took, the project was completed in sixty-five days and to the expectations of everyone involved.
What this means for a restaurant fit-out
When a format is new to a market, the contractor is doing design engineering as well as construction. That work is invisible in the finished building and it is the reason the finished building functions. It is also the reason a first-of-its-kind project should never be priced on the programme of a repeat one.
