SS & Glass Doors — Pearling Path
Metal and glass works in Qaysariya Souq, Muharraq
Fabrication of specialised SS & glass doors. Stainless steel and glass doors for the Pearling Path at Qaysariya Souq in Muharraq, fabricated and installed over forty-five days.
The constraint — raw materials on a long lead from China
The raw materials came from China on a long lead, so the programme was set by the shipment before any work began on site. When the material governs the start date, the engineering has to be finished while you wait rather than after you receive — otherwise the lead time is spent twice.
How we solved it — surveying every opening individually in a historic building
The doors carried a great deal of intricate detail, and that detail drove a long engineering coordination exercise before fabrication. Every junction between steel and glass had to be resolved on a drawing, because glass does not forgive a tolerance that steel might.
What this means for bespoke and specialist work
Installing new steel and glass into a historic fabric is the other half of the problem. No two openings in an old building are identical, and none of them matches the drawing exactly, so each one was surveyed on site and its door made to what was measured rather than to what was assumed. In a heritage setting the new work has to fit the building; the building is not going to be adjusted to fit the new work.
