Joinery works at the new Bahrain International Airport

Bespoke joinery works. A hundred and fifty square metre bespoke fit-out at the new Bahrain International Airport, delivered over about sixty days.

The constraint — bespoke joinery with no precedent to work from

The design was unusual, and the joinery elements in it had no precedent to work from. Resolving that took a long period of samples and mock-ups before anything could be built — the intent had to be matched physically, not approved on a drawing, because nobody could be certain from a drawing what the finished piece would look like.

How we solved it — fabrication running alongside the final approvals

That front-loaded effort pushed the start, and the programme was extended by ten days in total. We recovered the rest by increasing the shifts in production, so that fabrication ran while the remaining approvals were still being closed out. The work was produced through our joinery partners, to our shop drawings and under our supervision.

What this means for bespoke and specialist work

Airport projects carry more parties and more control than any other site type in Bahrain — access, security clearance and programme all sit with others. Getting bespoke joinery through that process and installed on time is a coordination achievement before it is a making one.
